Each year Greek organizations at Troy University hold fundraising events and donate those proceeds to philanthropic organizations and Pi Kappa Phi is no different. However, Pi Kappa Phi is unique in that our National philanthropy, The Ability Experience, is the only one in the nation that is owned and managed by its fraternity.  The Ability Experience benefits people with handicaps whether physical or mental. The Gamma Gamma Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi is highly involved with The Ability Experience at both the local and the national level.

In the spring, our chapter hosts our annual “War of the Roses” which is a week long competition between all the Sororities at Troy. The sororities compete in tee ball, a pageant, penny wars, and a banner contest. After the competitions for the week, the men of Pi Kappa Phi host the local special needs students to provide them with an enjoyable and memorable afternoon.

Our work for The Ability Experience is a year long program.  During the summer, members have the opportunity to participate in BUILD AMERICA, a program of The Ability Experience.  Pi Kapps have the opportunity to travel within their state and assist in building, upgrading and supporting special needs camps.  This allows our brothers a hands on opportunity to support those in need and have a great experience of brotherhood with those from chapters all over the country.

In the fall, our chapter continues our fund raising with numerous local business sponsored events along with volunteering with the local community.  This is an ideal time for our new Associate Members to bond with the Brothers of the chapter while participating in local fund raising and volunteer activities.

In 2013, the chapter raised a total of $5,150.72.  In 2014, we continued our upward climb and raised a total of $7,539.49.  In addition we were ranked number one in total donations for all the chapters in the state of Alabama and second in our Region which includes the University of South Alabama, Southern Mississippi and Auburn. In 2015, we raised $5,458.74 earning the “Silver” Award.  In 2016, we raised over $24,000.  This included funds for the Ability Experience, Journey of Hope and the purchase of a $15,000 seeing eye device for on the Troy University Professor’s that had his personal device destroyed in a house fire.

The Gamma Gamma chapter has not only made a name for itself at Troy University, but at the national level of Pi Kappa Phi through it’s fundraising efforts with The Ability Experience. Each year Pi Kapps from around the nation participate in the Journey of Hope, a 2,500 mile bike ride across America. Our chapter has participated in the Journey of Hope and the USMC Marathon in Washington, D.C.  Ben Barnett, our Archon, raised $6,000 and rode in the 2016 Journey of Hope.

The Ability Experience is a vital part of our chapter that is a great learning opportunity for any young man. We look forward to discussing more with you about The Ability Experience, and our chapter of Pi Kappa Phi that is leading the way by building the leaders of tomorrow.
